Our Story

About Heritage Farm Foundation

Heritage Farm Foundation stands as a testament to the dreams of a group of Triangle-area moms who desired a space where their families and the broader community could interact intimately with nature and understand the joy and fulfillment derived from growing and preparing their own food. This dream was the seed that has now blossomed into a dynamic community farm.

Ever since we opened our gates in August 2015, we’ve welcomed individuals of all ages, families, and students to partake in the journey of understanding and practicing sustainable farming techniques. But our focus isn’t restricted solely to farming.

Education, we believe, is an ongoing journey. We host a myriad of classes and events for our community, encouraging them to learn new skills, share their experiences, and find common ground with others equally excited about the principles of sustainable living.

Our commitment to sustainability also encompasses sustainable home building. We actively educate our community on techniques and practices that are eco-friendly, thereby reducing environmental impact and maximizing comfort and efficiency.

One unique aspect of our work involves the preservation of heritage breeds. These breeds, intrinsically linked with specific farming cultures and regions, often display greater resilience and adaptability to local conditions than commercial breeds. By focusing on their preservation, we contribute to biodiversity and sustain a living connection to our agricultural past.

Heritage Farm Foundation isn’t just a farm. We are a spirited community tied together by our shared love for the Earth and our pledge towards sustainable living. Be it volunteering, attending our classes, or simply visiting to admire the beauty of the farm, you become part of the Heritage Farm Foundation family.

We’re thrilled to have you join us in this exciting journey. Together, we can grow, create memories and make a significant impact on our community.

Our Mission

Our mission is the preservation of small farms. We achieve this by providing a space for the community and the new generation of farmers to learn both historic and modern farm practices. Our efforts encompass essential components of a successful small farm, such as water, soil, land, bee, and animal conservation.

We are committed to passing on the knowledge of sustainable farming to local individuals and beginning farmers through classes, tours, and demonstrations. Our goal is to provide support to small farmers, equipping them with the tools and conducive working conditions necessary to ensure the longevity of small farms.

Moreover, we strive to forge a strong bond between the community and the land. Through engaging events, educational classes, volunteer opportunities, and memorable experiences, we aim to foster a community that is invested in participating in the preservation of small farms.

Our Vision

Our vision is to create a future where small farms flourish, supported by a community deeply connected to the land and committed to sustainable practices. We see a future where new generations of farmers carry on the rich tradition of farming, equipped with the knowledge and tools they need to succeed.

We envision a world where conservation is an integral part of farming, ensuring the health and vitality of our land, water, bees, and animals. Our vision extends to fostering a world where the community actively participates in preserving small farms, understanding their vital role in our society and our collective wellbeing.

In essence, we aim to nurture a sustainable farming culture where everyone has a part to play, ensuring the future of small farms for generations to come.
