The farm animals through history grew up and adapted to very different environments. Some animals were more resistant to weather and others more resistant to disease, while others had special adaptations that may soon be lost because big factory agricultural farming have switched to using only a few hybrid farm breeds.
With trends like changing climate and antibiotic resistant super bugs; these soon to be extinct farm animals could prove to be valuable assets to our future and the future of society as a whole. Not to mention that some of them are as cute as all get out. There used to be hundreds of different breeds of chickens with eggs of all kinds of different colors, sizes and shapes. Now there are only a few of the most productive and manageable breeds; leaving us with boring white or brown only eggs. What if one of these fine feathered foul carried the gene to stop cancer or help diabetes? Those genetics could be lost forever. Biodiversity is important to everyone. The Heritage Farm Foundation is dedicated to the preservation of endangered animal breeds.
